The severity of wildfires in California and throughout the west will continue to increase in intensity and occurrence, leading to the need for every project team to consider how this could affect a given property and how to design for those factors, without sacrificing the quality of the design, habitat and the program.

  • Understand the basic requirements for creating and maintaining defensible space, including specific requirements for common plant communities and topographic conditions in Monterey County.
  • Learn how to assess the risk of wildfire during site analysis phase of a project. Using this information, learn how to incorporate design elements that reduce fire potential while creating beautiful and resilient site specific gardens for outdoor living.
