SUMMARY:Passive House Multi-Family - Good for All is Good for One Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Passive House Multi-Family – Good for All is Good for One\nHow Passive House Qualities Benefit both Occupants & Owners\nPresentation by Shane Pollin – CA Passive House  \nTarget Audience:  Building owners\, developers\, code reviewers\, planning officials and design professionals interested in learning about the benefits of integrating passive house principles into larger multi-family or mixed-use projects. \nIn this session\, the link between occupant satisfaction and owner satisfaction will be established.  Given the importance of occupant satisfaction\, particularly in the multi-family residential sector\, Owners should consider how they can design their buildings to achieve occupant satisfaction.  A survey of articles describing passive house buildings reveals a number of characteristics which are common to the buildings constructed to this standard.  These characteristics embody certain qualities which are highly desirable to both owners and occupants.  Given the desirability of these qualities\, the question becomes what strategies can be employed to ensure the presence of the desired characteristics.  The answer is the Passive House principles of building design and construction.   \nThe presentation will then highlight an ambitious new project under development in the State of Maryland.  The Hillandale Gateway project will be an all-electric\, multi-building\, mixed-use\, mixed-income project designed to reach high levels of sustainability and resiliency.  The project will feature 463 total homes in two buildings along with associated parking and commercial space.  The project is currently seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)\, Energy Star\, Enterprise Green Communities\, WELL\, and Passive House certifications on two buildings.  One building\, comprised of one hundred fifty-five (155) homes in eleven stories\, is also being designed to achieve Zero Net Energy.  Once completed\, this project will be both the largest passive house and the largest residential zero net energy project in the State of Maryland and the region.   \nFinally\, with a long-term perspective\, the team has also demonstrated a “best value” vs purely “first cost” approach throughout the design and development process.  The advantages of refocusing on the question of “Is it worth it?” compared to the far more common “How much does it cost?” will be explored. \n

SUMMARY:The 60-Minute MBA for Architects
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Steve Burns\, FAIA | Founder | The Well-Designed Firm \nBeing a brilliant architect rarely translates into having a successful business. With all the years of education and training to make us experts in our profession\, the skills needed to have a successful business were conveniently overlooked. This webinar will fill the void and provide you with the business management highlights that every firm needs to apply to achieve their full potential. \nIn this session\, we will learn the fundamentals of all successful AE firms and provide the basis for making well-grounded business decisions. We will learn how firms can transition from being professionals providing services\, to highly tuned businesses that can identify the needs of the marketplace and create services and products that are appropriately priced and yield consistent and greater profits. \nRather than seeking out new projects that merely build upon your current skills\, you will start from a business-thinking mindset\, where processes that are critical to building a thriving firm are examined and constituted in your firm. We will explore the importance of data within an architect firm and demonstrate how careful collection and interpretation can lead your firm into more exciting and profitable territory. \nJoin us for an engaging\, live webinar presented by Steven Burns\, FAIA\, as he shares lessons learned over 35 years working with over 1\,300 architecture firms.   \nLive on Zoom here.

SUMMARY:Building to Campus Scale: Water Strategies in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Building to Campus Scale: Water Strategies in a Changing Climate \nDate: Thursday\, December 8\, 2022\nWebinar: 12:00 – 1:30 P.M.\nLearning Units: 1.5 AIA LU/HSW\nCost: Free to AIA MB Members\, Sponsors\, and Architecture Students;\nModerator: Laura Dulski\, AIA\, LEED BD+C\, SEED AP | Principal\, DLR Group\nSpeaker: Erin English\, PE\, LEED AP | Practice Leader\, Biohabitats \nHow do we adapt our built environment’s water footprint for a changing climate? \nDecentralized strategies\, or those that can be implemented at the building\, campus or neighborhood scale\, will contribute to water resiliency alongside investments in upgrades to municipal scale infrastructure. Selecting appropriate decentralized water strategies depends on a myriad of conditions such as building typology and use\, regional regulatory climate\, and site and watershed considerations. This session will share best practices from the perspective of a ‘One Water’ paradigm which seeks to unify often disparate water systems such as stormwater\, wastewater\, and water reuse. \nRegister here
