DESCRIPTION:Pikes Peak Summit Complex:\nAn All-Electric & Severe Climate Case Study \nDate: Wednesday\, March 22\, 2023.\nTime: 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nPresenter: Pete Jefferson\, PE\, WELL Faculty\, LEED AP | Principal\, BranchPattern\nUnits: 1 LU/HSW (pending approval); Qualifies for 1 hr. ZNCD MCE\nTickets: Free \nAt 14\,115 feet above sea level\, Pikes Peak is a unique high mountain summit accessible to visitors from all over the world\, despite being in the harshest climate in North America. Despite the obstacles posed by the harsh climate\, the vision of the Summit Complex became one that aligned closely with the petals of the Living Building Challenge\, and ultimately certification became a project goal. \nAt the heart of the design response is a bioclimatic design approach\, incorporating elements of biomimicry and regenerative design principles to achieve it. Having opened in June 2021 as the highest elevation public building in North America\, the project is now open to visitors. As the project team continues to live with the building to measure and optimize performance. Design decisions are constantly being tested by the climate\, and in this webinar you will get to hear what worked\, what didn’t\, and lessons learned in the Summit Complex project. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Passive House Multi-Family - Good for All is Good for One Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Passive House Multi-Family – Good for All is Good for One\nHow Passive House Qualities Benefit both Occupants & Owners\nPresentation by Shane Pollin – CA Passive House  \nTarget Audience:  Building owners\, developers\, code reviewers\, planning officials and design professionals interested in learning about the benefits of integrating passive house principles into larger multi-family or mixed-use projects. \nIn this session\, the link between occupant satisfaction and owner satisfaction will be established.  Given the importance of occupant satisfaction\, particularly in the multi-family residential sector\, Owners should consider how they can design their buildings to achieve occupant satisfaction.  A survey of articles describing passive house buildings reveals a number of characteristics which are common to the buildings constructed to this standard.  These characteristics embody certain qualities which are highly desirable to both owners and occupants.  Given the desirability of these qualities\, the question becomes what strategies can be employed to ensure the presence of the desired characteristics.  The answer is the Passive House principles of building design and construction.   \nThe presentation will then highlight an ambitious new project under development in the State of Maryland.  The Hillandale Gateway project will be an all-electric\, multi-building\, mixed-use\, mixed-income project designed to reach high levels of sustainability and resiliency.  The project will feature 463 total homes in two buildings along with associated parking and commercial space.  The project is currently seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)\, Energy Star\, Enterprise Green Communities\, WELL\, and Passive House certifications on two buildings.  One building\, comprised of one hundred fifty-five (155) homes in eleven stories\, is also being designed to achieve Zero Net Energy.  Once completed\, this project will be both the largest passive house and the largest residential zero net energy project in the State of Maryland and the region.   \nFinally\, with a long-term perspective\, the team has also demonstrated a “best value” vs purely “first cost” approach throughout the design and development process.  The advantages of refocusing on the question of “Is it worth it?” compared to the far more common “How much does it cost?” will be explored. \n

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Della Walker House has been a subject of mystery\, facing the Bay\, at the end of Carmel Beach. Very few have been inside the gates\, no less inside the rooms. In 2023\, Kathryn Smith authored a lavishly illustrated publication\, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Walker House\, which answers all the questions from who the client was\, what did it cost\, who designed all the furniture\, and more. In the lecture\, she presents original drawings\, historic photographs\, summaries of the architect-client correspondence\, and ends with a tour of the interior in new color images made specifically for this publication. Pierluigi Serraino\, Bay Area architectural critic\, described Smith’s Walker House as “a revelation\, answers questions we never even thought to ask\, with more photos we never knew existed.” Smith explained\, “I am eager to present this new information in Carmel-by-the-Sea\, where it will be most welcomed and appreciated.” The lecture is co-sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Monterey Bay (AIA Monterey Bay) and Monterey Area Architectural Resources Archive (MAARA). A book sale and signing follows immediately after the lecture. Admission is $10 for members of sponsoring organizations\, $20 for the public\, tickets only available at the door. SUMMARY:Frances Elkins: Visionary American Designer
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Frances Elkins: Visionary American Designer\nPresented by:\nMonterey Area Architectural Resources Archive (MAARA) \nLecturer: Scott Powell\nDate: Sunday\, November 5\, 2023\nLocation: Stanton Center\, 5 Customs House Plaza\, Monterey\nTime: Lecture & questions: 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. doors open at 12:30 p.m.\nBook signing & refreshments: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.\nPrice: $10 AIA Members & Sponsors\, Students\, and MAARA Members\n$20 Non-Members\nTickets: Available only at the door\, no pre-registration available \nScott Powell will discuss the innovative interiors of Frances Adler Elkins (1887-1953)\, known for her adroit mixtures of the classical and the modern\, her fresh sense of color and texture\, and her concern for comfort and livability. She is considered one of the best American interior designers of all time. Elkins\, based in Monterey\, worked closely with many great architects including her Chicago-based brother David Adler as well as the prominent California architects Gardner Dailey\, William Wurster\, George Washington Smith\, Clarence Tantau\, Wallace Neff\, Roland Coate\, George Kaufmann\, Reginald Johnson\, Lewis Hobart\, Robert Stanton\, and Lutah Maria Riggs. The houses\, hotels and clubhouses Elkins designed in northern California also featured the work of outstanding Monterey and Carmel artists including Francis & Gene McComas\, the Bruton sisters\, and Remo Scardigli. Elkins’ commissions on the Monterey Peninsula were frequently landscaped by the illustrious Thomas Church\, but also included gardens by talents such as Isabella Worn. The lecture will present images of interiors and exteriors around the country with special emphasis on Chicago and the North Shore\, and on Pebble Beach\, Monterey and Carmel. Photos of sketches\, blueprints\, fabrics and wall coverings from the extensive Frances Elkins Archives at Monterey Peninsula College will also be part of the presentation. \nPowell’s book Frances Elkins: Visionary American Designer\, was published by Rizzoli in late March 2023 and will be available for sale at the event. \nSince 2002\, Scott Powell has been researching the career of Frances Elkins. He has documented over 250 Elkins commissions\, many of them previously unknown. His research includes close contact with existing Elkins family members and clients\, ongoing review of her project files and several photo archives throughout the U.S.\, and visits to several extant Elkins commissions on the West Coast. His interest in Elkins has also led to the acquisition of furniture\, textiles\, wall coverings and many unpublished period photographs related to her 35-year career. Studying Elkins combines his interests in classical and modern architecture\, interior design\, landscape design\, photography\, California history\, Hollywood’s two Golden Ages (the silent era and the first three decades of sound film)\, and textiles. \n# # # # \nMAARA was formed to (a) preserve information sources with respect to the architectural history of the Monterey area by collecting\, cataloguing\, storing\, preserving\, and maintaining records\, manuscripts\, photographs and other archival materials pertaining to such architectural history; (b) maintain and operate archival facilities adequate to preserve\, protect and provide public access to archival material related to the architectural history of the Monterey area\, (c) conduct educational programs for the public that focus on archival and historical research and the preservation of archival materials with respect to the architectural history of the Monterey area\, and (d) cooperate with municipal\, cultural and educational institutions in preserving and sharing the historical architectural resources of the Monterey area in the State of California.

SUMMARY:Lumber Reimagined: The Future of Reclamation
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, December 7\nTime: 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.\nPresenter: Ashley Yanda\, Urban Machine\nTickets: Free to AIA Members\, Sponsors\, and Students; $25 general public \nOnline Webinar \nUrban Machine\, a company based in Oakland California\, is leveraging the latest robotics and AI for salvaging lumber waste so it can be used to build again at a price competitive to virgin lumber.
