SUMMARY:Green Specs Division 1: Construction Waste Management\, Reducing Waste at Every Step
DESCRIPTION:COTE Course Presented by AIA MB\nGreen Specs Division 1: Construction Waste Management\,\nReducing Waste at Every Step\n(while improving collaboration between architect\, contractor and waste facility) \nDate: Friday\, May 21\, 2021\nTime: 12:00 to 1:30 P.M.\nCredits: 1.5 AIA LU\nZoom Webinar \nDescription\nConstruction waste makes up one-third of the total refuse nationwide in the US. Demolition represents more than 90 percent of total C&D debris generation\, while construction represents less than 10 percent. \nSuch statistics makes it clear it is important to make better use of debris and existing building materials to make substantial changes in our landfills. This webinar will be a 3 person panel discussion between architects (participants) moderated by Libby Barnes\, AIA\, Tim Flanagan the General Manager of the Monterey Regional Waste Management District and John Teliha of Otto Construction\, located in Monterey CA. \nDiscussion will be focused on ways to reduce construction waste starting with the design phase through the end of construction and how these practices improve the environment and create cost benefits.

SUMMARY:Climate Action Webinar: Specifying Sustainable Concrete
DESCRIPTION:Time: 12:00 -1:00 P.M.\nLearning Units: 1 LU | HSW \nConcrete is used in nearly every structure we build today\, including buildings\, bridges\, homes and infrastructure. With greater emphasis placed on sustainability\, design professionals are faced with the challenge of meeting traditional design criteria with evolving criteria that support green building and efforts to reduce impact on climate change. Prescriptive specifications often adversely impact the environmental footprint of concrete structures. This webinar outlines how concrete performance can be improved while lowering environmental footprint by implementing performance-based specifications. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:EARTH: Saving Our Soils
DESCRIPTION:CEU Approved for 1.5 Learning Units\nCost: Free to AIA MB Members\, Allies\, Associates\, Sponsors\, and Architecture Students \nThe AIAMB COTE is pleased to bring you the final lecture on earth’s 4 elements; EARTH: Saving our Soils. The webinar will feature local ecologist and landscape designer\, Paul Kephart\, of Rana The Cohabitat Co.. \nPaul will speak on the following: \n\nDefine the term “environment” (e.g. water shed\, health\, microbiome soils\, animals and plants that depend on the soil etc.).\nSoil preservation and provide examples.\nDrill down further in the conversation to speak about what happens to the hydrologic cycle – how does soil store not only carbon but also water.\nDiscuss “planning elements” and the connectivity to soil and water\, how can we plan for soil preservation and minimize soil disturbance during the design process – this is rarely in the vernacular of the planning process for a new home for example.\n\nIn addition\, we will be joined at the end of the webinar with John Kasunich\, of Haro Kasunich Engineers\, to offer another point of view on the inherent issues and creative solutions to the problems that arise between what is necessary to keep buildings intact on the land and what is necessary to develop a thriving landscape.   \nTo get a preview into some of the subjects covered\, we recommend watching an intriguing documentary  called “Kiss the Ground\,” on Netflix.

SUMMARY:OPTIMIZING WATER EFFICIENCY IN MULTI- FAMILY AND SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES
DESCRIPTION:This course will provide you with an overview of the business case surrounding green building for single-family and multi-family homes. Registration is required for attendance recording and certificate of completion. \nThe green building movement has challenged manufacturers\, design teams\, and owners to create products and designs that have a minimal impact on the environment while contributing to the health and well-being of those who live and work in the built space. One of the concerns driving the changes? \nWe can no longer rely on an endless supply of potable water – in parts of the US\, as well as across the globe. This course will explore how to earn indoor water use reduction credits in green building rating systems\, such as LEED v4 and WaterSense. We will focus on plumbing fixtures and fittings that are aesthetically pleasing and have been thoughtfully designed to maximize the efficiency of indoor water use without sacrificing performance by the end-user. \nObjectives: \n\nReview the evolution of the green building movement and its legislation pertaining to health and safety\nUnderstand the dynamics driving the green building movement for single-family and multi-family residences\nReview the water efficiency requirements and credits in several green building programs for homes\nReview examples of water-efficient\, high-performing plumbing fitting and fixtures\nExplore solutions that may increase water efficiency in single family and multi family residences

SUMMARY:LUNCH & LEARN WITH SKY FACTORY
DESCRIPTION:LUNCH & LEARN WITH SKY FACTORY\nThe Restorative Impact of Perceived Open Space \nLink  to Register for  Zoom:  \nHSW: 1 \nProgram Overview/Course Description: \nIn this course we explore the impact of enclosed interiors and deep-plan buildings on human performance.  We analyze the role circadian light and perceived open space play in shaping cognitive function\, as well as how our psycho-physiology changes in interior environments. We discuss a new approach that proposes the restorative value of perceived open space in its two essential orientations: perceived zenith and perceived horizon line. In contrast to how we perceive these spatial reference frames outdoors\, in enclosed interiors where such reference frames are often not visible\, we can stage architectural cues to alter our perception of interior space. Restoring these spatial reference frames through a valid multisensory illusion restores a range of wellness benefits normally associated with interiors applying biophilic design principles

SUMMARY:SAP Training Webinar
DESCRIPTION:WEBINAR:  Cal OES Safety Assessment Program\nOctober 30 @ 8:30 am – 4:30 pm \n8 HSW Units for AIA Members \nDisasters create terrible consequences\, forcing people out of their homes into temporary shelters and closing down communities. While productive individuals sit idle in shelters or even move away\, local building inspectors struggle to evaluate building safety in hundreds or thousands of damaged structures. Experience in dealing with earthquakes reveals that the number of total inspections due to non-structural damage can be more than three times the number of red-tagged and yellow-tagged buildings. \nThreats also exist from other natural and man-made disasters\, including floods\, hurricanes\, and explosions. Most building departments do not have the ability to perform multitudes of such inspections in a short period of time\, so a strong need exists to have a cadre of trained professionals available to assist local governments\, along with a program to manage this cadre. \nThe Safety Assessment Program has been used successfully in responding to disasters\, such as the Northridge\, Napa\, and San Simeon earthquakes in California\, as well as in response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This class will train credentialed persons (licensed civil engineers\, architects\, or certified building inspectors) to be SAP Evaluators to work in the field posting buildings. \nTraining Description: \nThe Safety Assessment Program utilizes volunteers and mutual aid resources to provide professional engineers and architects and certified building inspectors to assist local governments in safety evaluation of their built environment in an aftermath of a disaster. The program is managed by Cal OES with cooperation from professional organizations. SAP produces two resources\, SAP Evaluators\, described above\, and SAP Coordinators\, which are local government representatives that coordinate the program. \n  \nObjectives: \n\nAttendees will review protocol for working with and assisting local governments in the aftermath of an emergency.\nAttendees will learn to evaluate building safety in the aftermath of a disaster.\nAttendees (licensed civil engineers\, architects\, or certified building inspectors) will be trained as credentialed persons to be SAP Evaluators to work in the field posting buildings.\nAttendees will learn how to mentor others on health\, safety\, welfare evaluations.\n\nDate:   October 30\, 2020 \nVirtual Training       8:30 – 4:30 \nLearning Units: 8 AIA HSW Units \nCost:  $80 \n  \nRequired books: \nAttendees will be required to purchase the following books through store.atcouncil.org  To receive certification\, attendees must have books available for the training session.  Given mail distribution lead times\, attendees are highly encouraged to purchase books no later than 10/15/2020 to take advantage of the cheapest shipping costs. \nATC 20-1.
