SUMMARY:What is Mid-Century Modern (MCM) in California and the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:What is Mid-Century Modern (MCM) in California and the U.S.?\nSPEAKER: PIERLUIGI SERRAINO\nThis talk spells out the architectural themes that distinguish the Mid-Century Modern period from the large trajectory of Modernism. A definite set of attributes gives distinct character to the architecture of this time span\, with variations across the country that will be pointed out for the audience. California Modernism is a firm point in the annals of Modern Architecture. Here the focus is on the geographical areas within the Golden State that have the highest concentration of MCM projects\, a great many of them lasting masterpieces revered to this date. An overview of the key architects in various parts of California will give the audience a sense of the scope of this phenomenon. \nFollowed by reception. \nhttps://www.artsandarchitectureaiamb.com/ \nSUBMITTED FOR AIA CES APPROVAL\nDATE

SUMMARY:Building with Redwood Timbers with HUMBOLDT REDWOOD
DESCRIPTION:1 LU/HSW \nThe members of the California Redwood Association (CRA) have a long history of providing high-quality lumber products for use in a variety of building applications. CRA members also practice environmental stewardship and have a reputation for some of the more progressive and innovative voluntary forest and wildlife management programs in the industry. \n  \nThis course will provide evidence that Redwood Timbers offer a strong\, durable option for building projects without sacrificing quality or elegance. It will explore the use of Redwood Timbers for post and beam construction\, entryways\, decorative elements\, and outdoor living structures such as pergolas and gazebos. The course will provide comparisons between Redwood and other timber options. \nIt will also provide information about Redwood’s compliance with California’s Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI)\, thanks to its natural resistance to fire. And\, finally\, this course will provide evidence about sustainable forestry practices and how that relates to quality lumber products. \nSEE EVENT FLYER

SUMMARY:Light Color Health and Architectural Lighting
DESCRIPTION:With USAI Lighting \nhttp://www.usailighting.com/ \nCourse Description \nArchitectural Lighting:  Light is used to highlight the aesthetics of a space with care given to visual comfort and visual performance needs.  Light also affects human health.  It is a stimulus for regulating circadian rhythms\, behavior\, and other health functions.  This course details the growing body of research connecting light\, the receptors in our eye (the non-visual system) to many health functions.  These human health aspects include circadian regulation\, melatonin production\, and neurotransmitter functions in the brain. \nAs lighting technology improves (with color temperature control\, for example) and as the understanding of light and health improves\, this will have a profound effect on architectural lighting design.  This course will show recent beta-test lighting projects promoting “human centric” lighting\, as well as recent lighting projects where color control was used for promoting health\, behavior\, or productivity. \nLOCATION: THE GRILLE at Calvary 3001 Monterey/Salinas Hwy. SUMMARY:How Frank Lloyd Wright Became America's Greatest Architect Lecturer: Kathryn Smith
DESCRIPTION:Approved for 1 AIA LU    Co-sponsored by Monterey Area Architectural Resources Archive (MAARA) and the Alliance of Monterey Area Preservationists (AMAP) \nFriday\, April 20\, 7 pm Canterbury Woods Auditorium\, 651 Sinex Avenue near the corner of Forest Avenue\, Pacific Grove \nAbout the Talk: \nFrank Lloyd Wright\, the creator of New York’s Guggenheim Museum and Fallingwater\, a house over a waterfall\, is universally regarded as the greatest American architect who ever lived. His career spanned over seventy years from the 1890s to 1959. While he went from local recognition in Chicago in the 1910s to national notoriety for his love life in the 1920s\, he rose to international fame in the 1930s when he appeared on the cover of TIME magazine to finally becoming an icon of American culture in the 1940s and 1950s. He was then and still remains the only architect most people can remember by name. \nIn her new book\, Wright on Exhibit\, Kathryn Smith charts Wright’s rise and fall and rise again in a revealing exposition of how Wright refused to be forgotten and what he did step by step to attract the admiration of millions of Americans\, not to mention the Europeans and Japanese. \nHer illustrated lecture covers favorites such as the Prairie Houses\, the Usonian Houses\, and major public buildings including the Guggenheim Museum and Marin County Civic Center. She will devote special attention to one of Wright’s most dramatic houses by the water\, the Mrs. Della Walker House\, Carmel-by-the-Sea\, the only other Wright building that can be compared to Fallingwater in its profound connection between man and nature. \nMartin Filler for New York Review of Books describes Smith’s latest book Wright on Exhibit as “an intriguing treatise on career development … so illuminatingly detailed that it gives a richer portrait of Wright than many full-length biographies. The care\, audacity\, and originality with which Wright orchestrated the public presentation of his revolutionary architecture from start to finish…is laid out by Kathryn Smith with exceptional thoroughness.” \nAbout the Speaker: \nKathryn Smith is an architectural historian\, who is an historic preservation consultant\, author\, and lecturer. Her books include Wright on Exhibit: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Architectural Exhibitions (2017)\, Frank Lloyd Wright: American Master (2009)\, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin and Taliesin West (1997)\, and Frank Lloyd Wright\, Hollyhock House and Olive Hill (1992). \nSmith has been a consultant to Graycliff Conservancy\, Florida Southern College\, and Barnsdall Park. She has held NEH\, NEA\, and Graham Foundation fellowships. In 2003\, she was Scholar-in-Residence at the Robie House\, Chicago. In 2001\, Smith was awarded the Wright Spirit Award in the Professional Category from the Building Conservancy. \nFREE for current AMAP members and residents of Canterbury Woods.  \n   All others\, $20 at the door; ticket includes an AMAP membership for the rest of 2018!   \n  \n  \n
