SUMMARY:ADUs: A Climate Action Standard
DESCRIPTION:ADUs: A Climate Action Standard\nDate: 4/6/22\nTime: 12 pm – 1:30 pm \nDescription: Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) increase supply and diversity of housing stock\, add value to existing homes\, support infill development\, and can provide options for multi-generational and non-traditional families. Good ADU design and construction can also help California to meet goals for greenhouse gas reduction while increasing comfort and reducing energy costs for occupants. Thirty percent of the ADU’s in the USA are in California\, presenting an opportunity for national leadership on this issue for AIA CA and its members – Architects need to integrate climate-responsive design solutions and technologies into their ADU designs. \nLink: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_W1aTZFwuQBiXwMZ57x00xw \nThis course qualifies for ZNCD MCE credit.

SUMMARY:Smart Carbon Goals: Life Cycle Assessment in Design Practice
DESCRIPTION:Smart Carbon Goals: Life Cycle Assessment in Design Practice\nDate/Time: Wednesday\, March 30\, 2022\, 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m.\, Pacific Time\nLearning Units: 1 LU | HSW \nSpeaker:\nClaire McConnell\, BEMP | Associate\, Mithun\, Seattle \nDescription:\nSince the release of the 2030 Challenge in 2006\, energy efficiency has driven sustainability metrics in building design and construction. The work of Mithun\, and other signatories\, is demonstrating that carbon neutrality in building operations is achievable. Energy efficiency has become commonly understood and gained significant traction\, BUT it only addresses a portion of buildings’ total carbon impact. \nMithun is ramping up efforts to benchmark embodied carbon performance across our design portfolio using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This session will describe the critical role of embodied carbon in addressing climate change and highlight opportunities to apply LCA tools through replicable project workflows. Learn how Mithun applies LCA in practice\, critically review data\, and ultimately empower carbon-smart design decisions. Using specific examples from recent Mithun project work\, this session will demonstrate how LCA can be leveraged in project design and across our wider portfolio to achieve significant reductions in embodied carbon. \nEarn 1 LU | HSW for attending  \nRegister here \nMore information and additional resources can be found here: AIACalifornia.org

SUMMARY:AIA CA Climate Action Webinar: Visual Delight in Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Date/Time: Wednesday\, Mar 9\, 2022\, 12:00 PM in Pacific Time\nLearning Units: 1.5 LU | HSW\n \nViews out of windows have traditionally been considered “nice to have”\, but not crucial for human health and well-being. However\, evidence is mounting that quality views are essential for not only increased occupant comfort\, satisfaction\, and productivity\, but long-term health.\n \nSome questions this session will address: Are there additional benefits of daylighting and quality views for interior spaces? How important is this exposure\, for sleep quality\, metabolic health\, eye health and development\, disorientation\, depression\, anxiety\, and pain management? Where\, when\, and why does view matter the most? How can universal access to quality views be integrated into codes and policies\, urban design\, landscape design\, architecture\, and interior design to elevate quality views as a critical “must have” design outcome for all people?\n \nSpeaker: Lisa Heschong\, FIES | Heschong Mahone Group\n \nRegister here\nMore information and additional resources can be found here: https://aiacalifornia.org/

SUMMARY:Carmel Beach Great Sandcastle Contest
DESCRIPTION:AIA Monterey Bay is a co-sponsor of this year’s Sandcastle Contest\, taking place on Carmel Beach south of 10th Avenue\, on Saturday\, October 2. Building begins at 8 a.m. with judging beginning at noon. Judges bestow awards in multiple categories\, from the coveted Golden Shovel\, to the tongue-in-cheek Sour Grapes.\n \nFor six decades\, a late-summer tradition in Carmel-by-the-Sea has left no doubt that building sandcastles is not just child’s play. Taken seriously\, with artistic and architectural elements on full display\, The Great Sandcastle Contest on Carmel Beach has become a major event on anyone’s calendar. This year’s 60th annual event features the theme “Sixty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.”\n \n\nAnnual Great Sand Castle Contest on Carmel \nBeach \nRules and Regulations \n\nFirst and foremost: HAVE FUN!\nAlways use stairways going to and from the beach. Walking on slopes and beach bluffs is prohibited.\nBuild sand castles within the designated contest boundaries.\nThe contest is open to all ages.\nSkill level is not important – judging takes place in many categories.\nFollowing the theme is not required\, but remember that you will be limiting yourself in the number of categories in which you may be judged.\nArtistic expression is encouraged – just keep it family friendly.\nNo power tools may be used.\nSand castles and/or sculptures must be made of natural materials found at the beach. No paints or artificial colorings may be used.\nCommercial or political advertising is not appropriate.\nA project may be disqualified at the judges’ discretion.\nDogs are best left at home\, but if you must bring them keep them on a short leash. One stray dog can ruin a day’s hard work in a few minutes.\nPlease respect the beach and your fellow beach goers by cleaning up after yourself.\nBribery of Sand Castle Officials is condoned and encouraged. Bribes should be kept in good taste (or at least taste good). Monetary bribes cannot be accepted.\nThe judges’ decisions are arbitrary and final.\n\nGOOD LUCK! \n\nFor more information call Carmel Community Services at (831) 620-2020.

SUMMARY:Green Specs Division 1: Construction Waste Management\, Reducing Waste at Every Step
DESCRIPTION:COTE Course Presented by AIA MB\nGreen Specs Division 1: Construction Waste Management\,\nReducing Waste at Every Step\n(while improving collaboration between architect\, contractor and waste facility) \nDate: Friday\, May 21\, 2021\nTime: 12:00 to 1:30 P.M.\nCredits: 1.5 AIA LU\nZoom Webinar \nDescription\nConstruction waste makes up one-third of the total refuse nationwide in the US.
